Hair Extensions 101

Welcome back to The Botanica Blog!

If you're looking to add volume to fine hair, length to short hair, or simply want to experiment with a new hairstyle without making a permanent change, hair extensions could be the perfect solution for you.

For those curious about diving into the world of hair extensions for the first time, we've compiled essential insights and advice from stylist Laura Gingo!

Laura is a master artisans at Studio 571 who specializes in extensions, bringing over twenty years of expertise to the table. Her unique skills were sharpened under the tutelage of industry titans like Edward Tricomi of Warren Tricomi, color guru Beth Minardi, as well as iconic names like Bumble and Versace.

Ready to have longer, fuller hair in just a day?

What should someone think about before getting hair extensions?

Before adding the extra locks, ask yourself, "What look do I want to achieve." Some people want a little more face-framing volume while others are focused on the "lengthening" aspects.

In either case, always consider your stylist's experience and certifications. Not all brands of extension hair are created equally, so always make sure they purchase them from a reputable and trusted company.

How do you pick the right type of hair extension?

According to Laura's method, she first consults with her client and takes into account their hair dreams, goals, and desired look. Then together they can develop a plan that would suit the client best!

Her go-to brand of hair is "Hairdreams," a premium hair extension company who designs high quality, 100% human hair and bonding systems. These extensions are gentle on your own hair, easy to care for and can be reused multiple times.

The most common types of hair extensions

Clip-in hair extensions have clips sewn to the base of each weft. Those clips are then snapped open and applied to the roots of your hair and then snapped shut. Each weft is layered beneath your own hair to create an instantly longer and fuller look while remaining completely invisible. This type of extension can be applied by yourself at home within a matter of minutes and causes zero damage to your own hair. No professional help is required.

Tape-in hair extensions are pre-taped and then taped or glued together on both sides of a section of your hair. This method typically requires professional application as you need someone to align them with the roots of your hair, and then glue them using a heated tool. This is a semi-permanent solution that will need to be replaced every 1-2 months. It can cause damage to your hair as you're applying heat and glue to your own natural hair.

Sewn-in extensions is a lengthy process that starts off by braiding your natural hair into cornrows, then using a needle and thread to sew the weave into the braid or cornrow. This can take several hours to complete, and is typically recommended for those with thicker hair due to the tight application and strain it can cause on the scalp. A professional needs to perform this type of hair extension due to the complexity of it.

Caring for your extensions post-appointment

Managing a new long full head of hair can take some getting used to. Laura recommends brushing your hair regularly to prevent tangles and following up with maintenance appointments to ensure the best hair wearing experience.

Here are some general guidelines when caring for your extensions post-appointment:

  • Don't shampoo your hair for at least 48 hours after your extensions have been applied. This allows the attachment site to set.

  • ‍Don’t use products that contain parabens, or sulfates.

  • Don’t sleep with wet hair.

  • Avoid salty or chlorinated water.

The most important factor is to go to a trusted and experienced stylist!!!!
